Practitioner (own blog/paper) Modernization

Claude Code ports a 25-year-old Linux tape driver from kernel 2.4 to 6.8 over two evenings

Dmitry Brant recovers data from 1990s QIC-80 tapes and needed the ftape driver, abandoned around 2000, to run on a modern kernel. Claude Code iterated on compiler output to replace the deprecated kernel APIs, made a standalone out-of-tree build, then diagnosed hardware detection failures by comparing dmesg logs Brant pasted in against a known-good log. The driver now runs on Xubuntu 24.04.

Caveats

Needed several manual code fixes and back-and-forth. Hardware testing needed sudo, so the human loaded modules and pasted logs by hand. The author stresses it wouldn't have been possible without baseline kernel-module and C knowledge. Hobby project, single developer; the by-hand estimate is his own guess.
